Until 1901, some leaders of the Macedonian Committee were dishonest and caused the committee to lose respect. The former president, Boris Sarafoff, was known for gambling and bad political behavior. His poor reputation made people stop giving money to the cause. Sarafoff wasted every dollar he could control and even used threats to get money. He threatened a high government officer with harm if he refused to pay and warned that he would kidnap the child of a banker in Sofia unless a large sum was given to the committee Ski Resorts Bulgaria.
A New Beginning with Honest Leadership
When these actions became public, the committee was completely reorganized. Stoyan Mikhailovsky was chosen as the new president. He is a respected writer, poet, speaker, and scholar in Bulgaria. However, when Mikhailovsky and his team took control, they found the committee’s treasury empty and the financial records so confusing that they could not explain where the money had gone. During Sarafoff’s time, the worst people in Bulgaria controlled the committee. The local group in Samakov (also spelled Samacov on some maps) was even likely involved in the kidnapping of Miss Stone, a famous incident linked to the Macedonian cause.
The Situation in Macedonia
